Russia launches own high-capacity gas turbine, replacing foreign technology
MOSCOW, Oct 10 (Reuters) -Russia has launched a power unit based on its first domestically produced high-capacity gas turbine, as it develops its own alternatives to Western technology it can no longer import.
The new unit at the Udarnaya power station in southern Russia was inaugurated via video link on Wednesday evening by President Vladimir Putin, in a ceremony shown on state TV.
"The fact that we have new production facilities, and that we are becoming independent, technologically sovereign, at least in this segment, is very important," Putin said.
Previously, most new power stations in Russia relied mainly on gas turbines made by foreign manufacturers like Siemens SIEGn.DE, GE GE.N and Alstom ALSO.PA, which have left the country because of the Ukraine conflict.
Russia has for years been trying to start production of its own medium- and large-capacity gas turbines for power plants. The one installed at Udarnaya, the GTD-110M, was designed and manufactured by state conglomerate Rostec, along with an alternative turbine made by Russian industrial group Power Machines
"Previously, high-capacity gas turbines were supplied only from abroad, so today's event is doubly important for the Russian energy industry," said Alexander Pronin, head of Technopromexport, the Rostec subsidiary that built the power station.
Rostec said in a statement that the turbine was lighter and more compact than foreign models, and comparable in terms of performance.
With the launch of the new unit, the Udarnaya plant's capacity increased to 560 megawatts from 454. It will supply 10% of the electricity needed for the surrounding Krasnodar region.
